En geología, “alterado” se refiere a rocas que han sufrido cambios físicos o químicos después de su formación original, normalmente por la acción de fluidos hidrotermales, metamorfismo o meteorización. Los halos de alteración (por ejemplo sericítica, clorítica, silícea, carbonática) alrededor de estructuras o yacimientos son guías fundamentales de exploración en muchos depósitos de oro, cobre y metales base.
